Info - Things to check in the event of a 12v failure

On the 12 volt electrics for your van try checking in the following sequence:-

  1. Isolate 240v & 12v supplies inside the caravan and disconnect the battery.

Check the voltage across the terminals, if you have charged the battery it should hold the voltage above 12.5 volts, if it’s below 12 volts recharge for 24 hours and check again.

If it’s below 12 volts it’s defective and the battery should be renewed.

  1. If battery voltage is 12.5 volts (or slightly above) reconnect to caravan after isolating both the 240v and 12v switches at the PDU in the caravan.
  1. Test the voltage at the battery terminals, it should be the same level as in 2 above, if it’s below 12 volts there is a leakage that needs to be investigated see X below.
  1. If it’s OK, turn on the 240v switch and make sure the 12v charger is also switched on, check battery voltage again, it should be around 13.5 volts to 14.2 volts, and means the charger is working OK.

If there’s no change to the battery voltage with the mains to the charger on you could have blown an output fuse on the charger.

This could have happened if you have removed the battery terminals without isolating the 12v & 240v supplies before-hand.

  1. If the charger is working, and you have no 12v in caravan, check the wiring for an in line fuse between the battery and main 12v fuses - it should be just inside van next to battery box.
