A brief history

The company was founded in 1966 in the Chadwell Heath area of London, moved to Colchester and then to its final location in Long Melford in1976. Significantly two of the company's best known touring caravans, the Colchester and Melford took their name from their original manufacturing location, and each became a watch word for style, reliability and quality.

The large dealer network ensured that there were sales outlets and service centres in all the major areas of Britain, and, traditionally the loyalty of a large number of these dealers over the years ensured that there was a continuous link of experience and knowledge to pass on to customers.

Continued growth and expansion enabled Fleetwood to spread its area of operation into Europe and during the company's lifetime, Fleetwood exported its products into France, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Sweden and Denmark.

In 1987 Fleetwood Caravans Ltd became part of the Swedish based KABE group and was wholly owned by them until 2003 when they sold 50% of their share to the Slovenian company Adria Mobil doo.

In connection with the transaction Fleetwood took over the import rights to Adria's caravans in the United Kingdom.

The deal also had synergy effects on Fleetwood's materials procuring.  The remaining 50% share-holding was sold to Adria the following year.

On Tuesday 6th January 2009, the company went into administration; attempts were made to sell the business as a going concern but were unsuccessful.
