The Name

Where did the Name ‘Fleetwood’ come from?

Many think that Fleetwood Caravans were named after the town Fleetwood near to Blackpool but they would be wrong.  They did name two of the company's best known touring caravans, the Colchester and Melford after their original manufacturing location but this was not the case with the Fleetwood name.

If you look at other models Fleetwood produced through the years, you’ll find two limited editions produced in 1997, the Chelsworth and the Cavendish which were named after two Suffolk villages not far from Long Melford where they were produced.

However, Fleetwood Caravans were never produced in the Fleetwood area…....

They were in fact named after a black and chrome Cadillac that the man who owned the company had purchased.  He’d bought it from the comedian Peter Sellers and decided to name the company after his car – so the Fleetwood in FLEETWOOD CARAVANS came from the Cadillac Fleetwood. (The same colours as in the one in the picture opposite)

We don’t have pictures of the one he owned but took these of a similar car at a Classic Car show.
