Q&A - How do I stop the tape on the ceiling joints curling?

The tape is a common issue and is present on almost all caravans that use this system of covering the main panel joins

  1. We have a 2004 Heritage and the tape over the internal roof panel joins is curling at the edges. Any suggestions as to either repair or replace?
  2. The tape is coming away in several places in my 2003 Colchester 470-2EB and everywhere seems to have very limited adhesion. The problem is best explained by saying that the adhesive that has obviously been there since manufacture is still tacky to the touch.I feel this indicates a fault with the adhesive that is used with this tape. I would guess that almost any new adhesive that is applied to this tacky tape will as a result not perform well. Can you please advise / confirm the best way forward.
  3. I am looking for some of the joint covering tape that goes over the ceiling board joints as mine is peeling at the edges and though it sticks back it peels again in minutes. The sticky glue stuff on the back seems to have gone a bit gooey. Is this stuff readily available or is it from a certain supplier as most things in caravans seem generic across them all?

Response

The tape was originally supplied with one side having a self-adhesive coating.

If the coating is still OK try working on the existing tape to get it to stick down:-

Take a clean sheet of good quality printer paper and an iron.

Use the iron to heat the adhesive with the paper between the iron and the tape so as not to get glue on the iron and/or ceiling.

Depending on how far the adhesive on the tape has gone off as to how effective it will be. If your tape is tacky without the heat it should work.

At the ends the tape may have lost its adhesive to this area, so you will need to replace it.

Use the iron with the paper barrier to soften the glue beyond where it's come away,

Apply a good quality contact adhesive vary sparingly and roller (wall paper edge roller or similar) the tape back to location.

That should under normal circumstances sort the problem.

If you choose to replace the tape you may be able to purchase new tape from O’Leary Motorhomes (you'll find contact details under LINKS), mention the Club when phoning and ask for Kev.

One owner has made his own joining tape – members click here to read how

Another option could be to cover with a plastic trim - click here to see an example.

As a boat builder for forty years have experienced this problem many times,it's caused by the plastisiser In the vinyl wall covering reacting with the adhesive on the tape ( look at a roll of insulating tape after a few years) ,I have the same problem on my Fleetwood heritage 2003 .The only adhesive for this problem is a Nitrile based product but just not practical on old caravan,I'm going down the covering upvc strip route
